Cote d ’azur - Dream coast of the Jet Set - Program 6
Day 1: Cannes and the red cliffs of St. Raphael
Your first highlight comes straight after your arrival at the world’s most famous coastline: we helicopter you from Nice to Cannes where you will stay at an old yacht marina. At lunch you meet your fellow travellers and the escort team. The empty roads in the well-known Esterel massif to Fréjus provide an excellent start, returning via the Corniche d’Or from St. Raphael; on your left the red cliffs of Cap Roux, to your right the azure blue sea. There is time for a drink at the hotel rooftop garden pool before walking together to the Cannes old town for dinner.
Day 2: Nice, Monaco and Cap FerratA stylish start today: a drive along Cannes magnificent promenade, the »Boulevard de la Croisette«, which transforms to the catwalk of Hollywood stars during the annual film festival. Driving eastwards one highlight follows another: the beach promenade at Juan-Les-Pins, the marina at Antibes, the »Promenade des Anglais« in Nice. The sea lies at your feet as you climb the Roman Via Aurelia built Grande Corniche. We spend lunchtime in one of the hottest lounges in Monaco where your chance of having a prominent table neighbour is as high as the number of luxury yachts in the harbour. The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, where we subsequently visit the gardens and antiques collection, is a veritable relaxing oasis.
Day 3: Ravines and waterfalls backcountryWhat would the Côte d’Azur be without the wildly romantic Provencal backcountry? Today we drive north-westerly towards the backcountry, via the grottos of St. Cézaire-sur-Siagne, across isolated high plains with white chalk cliffs. We lunch in one of the best preserved medieval Provencal towns, Gourdon. In the afternoon ravines and waterfalls alternate; natural spectacles that sound more beautiful in French than English: Gorges du Loup, Cascades de Courmes, Cascade des Desmoiselles. Dinner is served high above the rooftops of Cannes.
Day 4: Grasse and PerfumeFew really know the history of Grasse, the capital of perfume: the rise of the then unknown tanning town started when it became fashionable in pre-revolutionary France to perfume leather gloves. Join us at one of the oldest perfumeries and glimpse behind the curtain of the world of perfume. Not until the afternoon do you have to take leave of your Alfa Romeo.
