Thomas Montanus was the medical superintendent of the city of Bruges in the late17th century. He, just as the current owners, shared the same passions: Medicine, Bruges and travelling.

The Montanus Hotel was completely renovated in 1998. The house of the former Mayor of Bruges, Frank Van Acker, was added to the complex.
